Home Minister Amit Shah took note of the murder of two civilians in an Army camp located at Rajouri and a top-level investigation will be called to punish the culprits in the case, said the Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief stated.
“Home Minister Amit Shah has taken a very serious note of this incident. I spoke to Home Minister Amit Shah and Lt Governor Manoj Sinha. It’s very important to hold a very high-level inquiry into this incident,” said Ravinder Raina, president of J&K BJP.
Two innocent civilians Surinder Kumar, and Kamal Kishore were killed while another was wounded during the firing at an army camp on Friday morning.
The murders led to huge protests. Protesters blamed the army for the deaths. The army, for its side, has stated that the civilians working as laborers for the army over the last 15 years, died in the terrorist shooting. The two men were killed as they walked towards the entry point of the army base on Friday.
“In an early morning firing incident by unidentified terrorists at Rajouri near Military Hospital, there have been a fatal casualty of two individuals. The Police, security forces, and civil administration officials are on the site,” tweeted the army.
J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has termed the incident as unfortunate and announced a settlement in the amount of 5 lakh to the family affected.
“The incident in Rajouri is very unfortunate. Condolences to the bereaved families. The price of a life cannot be set in monetary terms but still, I announce an ex-gratia relief of Rs five lakh for each affected family,” tweeted Mr. Sinha.
Mr. Raina added that Lt Governor met with the heads of the families affected and assured them that justice would be served.
“Our country functions as per law and no one is above the law. Whoever is involved should face the law,” declared Ravinder Raina.
It was reported that the Jammu and Kashmir police said they’ve filed a case and are conducting investigations and the army has agreed to cooperate with the investigation.
“An FIR has been registered. A thorough probe will be conducted. Whatever will be the findings probe will be shared. We assure people there will be a fair probe into the matter,” Haseeb Mugal the Deputy Inspector General of police Rajouri-Poonch.
Yesterday thousands of people protesting blocked the road between Jammu and Porch and attacked the army camp with stones. They demanded an end to the army guards, who they say have killed Surinder along with Kamal Kishore.
When the protesters refused to surrender, a senior army officer addressed the protesters and promised that it will be a partner in the investigation and support families of those who lost loved family members.
The previous J&K BJP state president had called for the establishment of a Court of Inquiry into the shooting incident. He expressed his hope that the army will uphold the top standards and respond to allegations.
“Like in the past when some civilians were killed in Shopian, Army conducted a Court of Inquiry and those involved were taken to task,” said Mr. Raina.
“I have full faith in the army, in this unfortunate and painful incident, the Army’s Northern Command will think over it and take action under the Army’s own court of inquiry.”
In July of 2020 three workers who were from Rajouri were killed during an unprovoked encounter in Shopian and subsequently rebranded as Pakistani terrorists.
A later Court of Inquiry by the army found its members as well as an officer for the murder of innocent civilians.
